Your attention is now a commodity and how to reclaim it.

Putzing around on the internet, if one gets maybe 2 hours or even an hour of focused time in a day. I actually think that’s higher than average.

“You get a show or a movie you’re really dying to watch, and you end up staying up late at night, so we actually compete with sleep and we’re winning!” wrote Netflix CEO Reed Hastings in one of the Q4 Quarterly letters.

This is life now: Posts, streams, feeds one constant, never-ending stream of non-sequitur and self-referential garbage that passes through our eyes and out of our brains at the speed of a swipe.

Imagine the impact one could have on their lives (and the world) if incredible work is done on those 2 hours a day and what if this could be replicated, doubled and even tripled, that amount of focused time, the impact would multiply.

An interesting exercise would be to audit our time as to how much of it is focused, meaningful work. Am I happy about this? or would like to increase focused hours and its potential impact.

What's worth doing today: It’s a worthwhile habit to jot down the night before or at the beginning of the day (or the end of the day before) What is worth doing today? What is worth focusing on?

Signal V/S  Noise- Filtering out: The Attention bandwidth is loaded with more than one can handle. Filtering out by internalising and coming to terms with the fact that ‘not everything needs to be responded to’ and saying ‘no’ to most requests.

Focusing is a physical act: Not allowing emails to guide the day, taming the apps on the phone and on the computer (or even better moving to a dumb phone). Now you’re ready to focus.
